What Is Self Care Sunday?

Self care is the act of dedicating time to taking care of yourself.

You do so by doing things you enjoy, while taking a break from responsibilities and errands.

It’s essentially a “me-day!”

Self care Sunday is devoting some “me-time” on Sunday. Why Sunday?

Well, for the most part, that’s everyone’s day off.

Additionally, Sunday is the last day of your weekend before the new work week starts.

You want to recharge and de-stress before you take on another week full of responsibilities, otherwise you are at risk for “burnout”.

Why Is Self Care So Important?

Taking the time to pause and relax your mind, body and soul, is extremely necessary.

For the most part, we are all running on fumes.

Think about it.

40 hour work-week. Family, significant other, social life, extras, hobbies, etc.

That’s quite a lot, right?!

Self care is extrememly important because it gives your mind a break from having to go fast on a daily basis.

As a result, your body also relaxes, releasing tension from your neck and back.

And of course, the soul! Self care is medicine for the soul!

Finding Time For A Self Care Routine

For many, finding time for a self care routine can be oretty tricky.

As I mentioned above, these days we all have so many responsibilities, taking time for ourselves can seem like a waste of time.

BIG MISTAKE!

Taking care of yourself is your right and should be respected and enforced!

Think about this: Imagine a car running low on gas.

Now picture yourself as the car, and picture your mind and body as the gas.

See where I’m going with this?

Eventually you will run out of gas.

In our everyday life, that can translate to “burnout”.

So, if you make it a priority to dedicate some time for yourself, and treat self care with the same level of urgency as your everyday tasks, you can make time for it.

13 Self Care Sunday Ideas

1. Do NOT go on your phone, upon waking up.

Ok, Ill be honest.

I definitely suffer from this!

Waking up is such a precious time. You’re rejuvanated from a good night’s sleep and you know it’s a Sunday and you most likely don’t have anything too urgent to take care of.

If the first thing you do is go on your phone, you are missing out on staying in that state of bliss a little longer!

So, try it at least once. Keep the phone away first thing in the morning.

2. Take one minute to meditate (or more if you’ve been meditating)

Meditation goes hand in hand with self care.

Take one minute to yourself by closing your eyes, placing your hands on your stomach, feeling every inhale and ehxale, feel the air around you, as well as your points of contact.

3. Take a quick stroll around the neighbourhood.

A nice morning walk will get those endorphins released and you’ll be smiling all day, inevitably!

4. Make your favourite breakfast.

You know, the one you didnt have time for throughout your week?

Self care Sunday calls for meals your soul desires and your body craves!

For me, that’s pancakes!

5. Watch your favourite show

I am a sucker for reality TV.

Sometimes I just love to watch TV without substance because it relaxes me!

I don’t have to pay too much attention to it, I just watch.

Whatever show you like, now’s the time to watch it!

6. Drink tea

Tea has been shown to have calming and relaxing effects on your body, as well as your nervous system.

Preferably, choose a tea without caffeine such as chamomile, or peppermint, ginger, etc.

Your body will thank you for this!

7. Have a spa day

You can do this at home by doing a hair mask, manicure, pedicure, face mask, etc.

If you want to be pampered, check out your local spa. You’ve earned this time!

8. Declutter (just a bit)

Obviously you don’t have to do too much since it’s self care Sunday.

Clutter can sometimes weigh pretty heavy on our minds.

Take 10-20 minutes and choose one small, messy area to declutter.

For me, that would be one drawer!

9. Order from your favourite restaurant (or go out to eat)

This one is one of my favourites.

If you have to cook a lot throughout your week, you know you deserve a break.

Choose your favourite restaurant and go out to eat for lunch or dinner!

Even better, order in and watch your favourite show!

10. Do a stretching routine

Our bodies are not designed to last forever.

They take quite a beating during our busy lives.

Stretching is shown to increase and maintain flexibility, as well as keep those precious ligments happy and healthy.

Take 5 minutes or more if you feel like it, to stretch every part of your body.

Feeling like doing a bit more? Try a 10 minute yoga flow routine and let the stress melt away.

11. Journal

Journaling your thoughts or plans, goals, etc, is incredibly beneficial.

It helps put your thoughts on paper and get a better sense of what’s happening up there!

It’s also very calming, which makes it ideal for a self care Sunday!

12. Self-love with affirmations

Find 3 self-love affirmations, go to your mirror and repeat them until they’ve sunken in.

This is an exercise that can take a while to feel comfortable or like it even works but it is a pertty beautiful thing to do for your hardworking mind, body and soul.

13. Wind down earlier and get a good night’s sleep

I’m sure you know all about the importance of a good nights sleep so I won’t touch too much on that!

Refrain from going on your phone 2 hours before you go to bed.

If 2 hours is too much, try 1 hour.

Relax in your bed and let your mind drift away to SlumberVille earlier than normal for a good night’s sleep!
